


Salar’s history is so deeply intertwined with Rome and its culture that, in our town, you can get a taste of Rome itself. You’ll be able to see the remains from the archaeologists’ perspective, learn how the Romans crafted mosaics and even become a chef from Ancient Rome.
Through our workshops, you’ll discover all the secrets that the Roman Empire and the ecosystem of the Roman Villa of Salar have placed
at our fingertips.
Oil lamps workshop
Participants will have the chance to model their own Roman oil lamp or noughts and crosses game using clay.
Includes:
- An explanation of the history of Roman oil lamps.
- Materials for the workshop.
Participants can take their lamp or noughts and crosses game home as a souvenir.
Duration: 80 minutes
Archaeodrome
Participants will excavate and discover different historic remains.
Includes:
- An explanation of the different ground layers.
- Collection of different remains from each layer.
- Tool use and soil recycling.
- Information about the remains identified.
- Carried out under the supervision of a qualified archaeologist.
After the activity, participants will receive a souvenir.
Duration: 90 minutes
Roman mosaics
Participants will create a personalised mosaic.
Includes:
- A talk on the creation of mosaics in Ancient Rome.
- Materials for the workshop.
- Each participant will create a mosaic, either using a personalised design or a template.
Participants can take their mosaic home as a souvenir.
Duration: 80 minutes.
Natural Roman cosmetics workshop
During this workshop, participants will learn about natural cosmetics, with products made with thyme, rosemary and other natural herbs found the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama mountains.
Includes:
- A talk on natural cosmetics made using local natural ingredients.
- Materials for the workshop.
- Creation of a sample of a product that students will take home.
Duration: 90 minutes.
Roman cuisine workshop
Participants will have the chance to step into the shoes of the former Roman residents of Salar. We’ll cook traditional recipes from the era with similar products and compare them with modern Italian gastronomy.
Duration: 90 minutes.
Roman garum, pâté and oil workshop
We’ll start with a tasting of our local olive oil, giving you a chance to sample this liquid gold from hojiblanca and picual olives, harvested in the surrounding area. We’ll then make some typical Roman garum and pâté.
Those who would like to learn more about olive oil will have the chance to visit one of the oil cooperatives in town.
